I’m just going to put this out there, on our two-week road trip through Canada, the region that completely stole my heart was Kananaskis County. Tucked away in the shadow of its more famous neighbour, Banff, it’s a wild, raw, and peaceful pocket of the Rockies that feels like Canada’s best-kept secret. If you’re craving untouched nature, jaw-dropping alpine scenery, and trails that aren’t swarming with tourists, this is where you’ll find it, with my guide to the best hikes in Kananaskis County.

The Practicalities:
Getting There:
There are direct flights from the UK to Calgary, which is a short drive from the Kananaskis mountains. You can also get a flight to Vancouver and then connect to Calgary.
When To Visit:
I highly recommend renting a car which is four-wheel drive and high clearance, you will need to get to pretty much all the trailheads. Roads are typically fairly good in Canada but once you get into the wilderness they can get a bit rougher. It is better to be safe than sorry!
How Long To Stay:
I would say you need a minimum of three full days in the region, to be able to experience a wide variety of hikes, but the longer you can stay the better!
Prices:
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Canada isn’t cheap. The prices we experienced reflected those of the UK when it comes to meals, hotels, car rental, etc. So, be sure to budget accordingly.

Travel Tips:
Make sure you purchase a Parks Canada Discovery Pass.
This will allow you access to more than 80 Canadian destinations in 12 months, plus it means you can avoid having to join the queues when you enter national parks.
Pack for all weathers, no matter the season.
It is the mountains after all! Even in the height of summer, the weather can switch from sunshine and blue skies to cold, cloudy and rainy in minutes. Take layers, waterproofs and suitable footwear. If you need guidance on what gear to take, check out my hiking kit guide here.
Bear safety is a hugely important factor when you’re exploring the Canadian wilderness.
It is essential to carry bear spray, make noise and stay vigilant. Check out the Canadian bear safety guidelines here. One thing to note is that bear spray cannot be taken on planes, so I recommend buying it once you get to your destination.

The Best Accommodation in Kananaskis County
I highly recommend staying at Mount Engadine Lodge. We had one of their glamping tents and absolutely loved it. The rooms are lush, the food is delicious and the location is ideal with lots of trails starting right from your doorstep. If Mount Engadine is full, then check out Kananaskis Mountain Lodge in Kananaskis Village.

The Best Hikes In Kananaskis County
The best way to see and experience the vast landscapes of the region is to hike. I have to warn you though, most of the trails in the region are pretty challenging so bring your hiking poles and plenty of snacks!
Smutwood Peak:
This was my favourite hike of our whole Canadian trip! It is a spicy 18km route with 1000m of elevation up from the valley to the summit of Smutwood Peak, via incredible lakes and stunning views. It is a challenging climb and some scrambling is required near the top, but it is worth all the effort for the endless vistas you get rewarded with. Trust me, it will blow your mind.

The Tent Ridge Loop:
This hike is only 10km long, but it has an abundance of spicy climbs and stunning views. It takes you up to the beautiful Tent Ridge which you follow in a horseshoe shape, taking in non-stop views of the surrounding peaks, lakes and Spray Valley. It is worth noting that this route requires some simple scrambling and a head for heights.

The East End of Rundle:
A classic trail in the region, located just outside of Canmore. I warn you, do not underestimate this route! Despite it being short, it is only for those who are seeking out a tough climb, as you will be ascending almost 900m in under 5km. The terrain is challenging, loose, steep and scramble-y but the views at the top over the surrounding peaks and down Spray Valley are nothing short of epic!

Elbow Lake to Tombstone Lakes:
If your legs need a rest, add this simple and rewarding trail to your itinerary. It winds through a beautiful valley nestled between towering summits, passing by scenic lakes and waterfalls, with multiple locations suitable for a cold water swim with a view. It is long, but it is gentle and you can turn back at any time.

Rawson Lake & Sarrail Ridge:
This popular trail offers absolutely phenomenal views. Firstly it climbs up to the shores of picturesque Rawson Lake, which is where most people turn back. However if you fancy a challenge then you can climb up the steep and narrow path to Sarrail Ridge, which will reward you with utterly mind-blowing views over the Rocky Mountains and Upper Kananaskis Lake. Just make sure you take your hiking poles!
