Maintaining a vegan diet is extremely easy in Tulum. There is an absolute abundance of plant based cafes and restaurants as well as vegan options at most other food spots. If you’re visiting in the future, be sure to check out these gems:
The Real Coconut
Located in Sanara hotel, this was one of our go-to breakfast spots. The menu is insane. Pages upon pages of plant based goodness. The drinks list alone is 6 pages long – you will be spoilt for choice! Personal highlights were the avocado on toast (the plantain bread is deliciously sweet), the banana split smoothie and the chia apple cereal. Not to mention the homemade ginger ale – just remember to ask for no straw!
This was by far my favourite lunch cafe in Tulum. They serve up a 100% raw vegan menu focused around whole foods, salads, smoothie bowls and coconut milk drinks. It is heaven. Their cinnamon spiced frappuchino was my daily tipple of choice and their zucchini alfredo is out of this world.
Charlys Vegan Tacos
This was my favourite dinner location in Tulum. This 100% vegan restaurant focuses on award winning tacos and a variety of Mexican classics. Their “signature taco” selection is insanely good, as is the mango infused guacamole. My boyfriend loved the tempura “chicken” which apparently tasted like the real thing! Don’t forget to try their vegan brownie cheesecake which is the bomb.
You’ve probably seen this white cafe adorned with rope swings all over instagram and for good reason, its gorgeous interior is complimented by equally amazing food. They serve up a menu predominantly made up of smoothie bowls but also have other vegan treats, snacks and drinks. The peanut butter bowl was our favourite.
This restaurant serves up the best vegan burrito I have ever tried, hands down! They do have meat and vegetarian options, but the vegan ones are the best ;). Their guacamole was one of the most delicious (and biggest portions sizes!) I tried in Mexico; and they also do a vegan friendly breakfast menu including delicious homemade cinnamon granola and coconut yoghurt.
Macondo at Nomade
This vegetarian and vegan friendly restaurant has some pretty delicious options, including fresh veggie sushi, a vegan “nacho bowl” and a whole host of smoothies. It is set in the most beautiful “instagram gold” surroundings; but be warned the dinner menu is much less vegan friendly than the lunch selection.
Best known for its unique decor, interior design and woven “nests” on the roof – this instagram famous restaurant also has a delicious (albeit posh) vegan friendly menu. There are a handful of vegan options, highlights being the pumpkin hummus and the stuffed tacos. Be sure to book in advance to get a good table, and go early to see the “nests” at sunset without the crowds flocking to get their selfies in them.
I Scream Bar
Located right next to the very popular (non-vegan) ice cream bar “Origami” is its vegan competitor, I Scream Bar. They make vegan ice cream fresh every day and the flavours change each time you visit; from classics like vanilla and chocolate through to tropical twists like Pina Colada; they have your late night dessert cravings covered.
La Hoja Verde and Co.Conamor
I didn’t get a chance to visit these two local vegetarian restaurants but both came highly recommended. With less of a focus on superfoods, acai and salads; these locations serve up comfort food such as vegan burritos, pizzas and pasta. Perfect for when you want something a little more indulgent.
