How To Achieve Lasting Motivation

We’ve all been there. On Monday you get up early, smash an amazing workout and eat healthy meals all day, but by Friday you’re reaching for pizza, laying in until 3pm and avoiding the gym like the plague. It can be super challenging to maintain your motivation, but here are my top tips to stay positive about your fitness journey.

Keep Yourself Accountable

Tell your friends, family and partner about your fitness goals. Not only can they get involved, come to the gym with you and help prepare healthy meals; but they can check in with your progress. They can ask about how you’re doing, keep you on track when you go out, and provide ongoing support.

Enjoy Yourself

Let’s be honest, if you don’t like your workouts then you’re not going to keep doing them! If you hate running, then maybe give that 10km race a miss. Enjoy your training. Exercise can feel intimidating and like a chore but I promise you, it can be fun. Try new things – theres a million and one ways to get fit nowadays, from bouncing on mini trampolines to hiking up mountains. There is bound to be something that you like.

Focus on Performance

It is easy in fitness to become engrossed in the aesthetics. The thigh gap. The abs. The toned butt. In reality there is so much more to being fit than how defined your stomach is. Instead, set some goals which aren’t based on how you look. Focus on your performance – sign up for your first race or work on doing a pull-up. It is amazingly motivating to see yourself get stronger and fitter.

Enjoy The Journey

It is important to accept that it won’t all be smooth sailing. Making changes to your lifestyle is a journey that you’re in for the long term. There will be good days and there will be bad days. There’ll be times when you don’t train for months, and times when you workout every day. There’ll be weeks where you eat too much and weeks where you eat too little. There will be highs and lows and everything in between. And that’s ok. What is important is that you consistently make healthy choices and get moving on a regular basis. Accept the journey, enjoy it and keep going.
