How To Spend A Day In Greenwich, London | One Day Itinerary

I always describe London as a city of villages, each with its own charm and character, and one of my personal favourites is Greenwich. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is bursting with history, stunning architecture, independent boutiques, and delicious food spots. It’s the perfect place for a day out, whether you’re a tourist seeing the city for the first time or a London local looking to explore beyond your usual haunts. So, here’s how I recommend spending the perfect day in Greenwich.

Spend a Day in Greenwich, One Day Itinerary:

Catch The Thames Clipper

One of the best ways to get to Greenwich is by hopping on the Thames Clipper boat. Sailing along the river gives you a unique perspective of London, passing iconic landmarks like Tower Bridge, the Shard and the London Eye along the way. Plus it drops you right in the heart of Greenwich so you’re ready to explore. I recommend sitting outside if the weather’s nice so you can take in the views.

Grab A Coffee at 15 Grams

Once you’ve hopped off the boat, make your way to 15 Grams – a cosy little coffee shop tucked just off the main street. It’s a local gem known for its speciality coffee. It’s the ideal place to fuel up before a full day of exploring – and if you’re a pastry person, their baked goods are worth a try too!

Visit Greenwich Park & The Royal Observatory

Once you’re caffeinated, wander into the beautiful Greenwich Park – one of London’s oldest and most scenic green spaces. As you head uphill, you’ll be treated to one of the best panoramic views in the city. At the top sits the Royal Observatory, famously home to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and the Prime Meridian Line. I’ll be honest – entry is on the pricier side, but if you do go in, you’ll get to stand with one foot in both the Eastern and Western hemispheres, which is pretty cool! That said, if you’re looking to save a few pennies, simply walking up for the view alone is well worth it.

Explore The Queen’s House

From the Royal Observatory, make your way back down the hill towards the Queen’s House – an attraction that often gets overlooked, but is absolutely worth a visit. It’s a formal royal residence which is now home to a free art gallery. If art isn’t your thing, the building itself is stunning with the iconic Tulip stairs on the inside and towering columns on the outside.

Grab Some Lunch

When hunger hits, you’ve got two great options depending on your mood. If you’re after something quick and casual head to Greenwich Market. It’s a bustling little spot packed with independent food stalls serving everything from Ethiopian curries to gourmet toasties and fresh doughnuts. Ideal if you want to snack as you wander or grab something on the go.

If you’re after a sit-down meal with a view, make your way to the Trafalgar Tavern. This historic riverside pub dates back to 1837 and serves up classic British fare in a grand, nautical setting. Think fish and chips, pies, and a solid roast if you’re there on a Sunday with views over the Thames.

Head to The Old Royal Naval College

In my opinion, this is the highlight of a day in Greenwich! The Old Royal Naval College has absolutely stunning architecture and the real star of the show is the Painted Hall. It is often referred to as the “Sistine Chapel of the UK,” with its beautiful ceiling and walls covered in intricate Baroque artwork. If there is one thing you see in Greenwich, make it this! While you’re there, pop into the Chapel across the courtyard – it’s much quieter but just as beautiful, with intricate blue-and-gold interiors. And around the corner there’s even a Victorian-era skittle alley tucked away on-site which is fun to try your hand at!

And Finally, Visit The Cutty Sark

This beautifully restored 19th-century tea clipper is another of Greenwich’s big attractions – but I warn you, the ticket price is on the higher side. Personally, I think it’s a little steep for what you get, and it can easily be admired from the outside while you stroll along the river. That said, if you’re a real history buff or love all things nautical, it might be worth the splurge. Inside, you can walk beneath the ship’s hull, explore the decks, and learn about its global voyages.

And that’s a wrap on the perfect day in Greenwich! Whether you’re there for the history, the views, the food (or all three), I hope this guide helps you make the most of your visit.
